A Short Break on the North Yorkshire Coast

Big Tide,Big Sea at West Pier, Whitby!
Heather and I had an excellent couple of days staying at The Smuggler’s Rock B&B in Ravenscar in between Scarborough and Whitby. Although we had a couple of wet mornings, the afternoons were excellent and the light was magical. On Thursday we walked along the Cleveland Way from Runswick to Staithes and back. There was a distinctly autumnal feel to the air and countryside. Only a few butterflies were on the wing: red admiral, small tortoiseshell and speckled wood. It is only this year that I have come to appreciate how widespread this insect is and what a long flight period it has. It must produce multiple broods during the year as I have observed it nearly every time I have been out from May till September! One of the most fascinating aspects to this couple of days away has been the huge spring tides. Any higher and the water would have overflowed the inner harbour at Whitby. This combined with the large swell on Thursday meant that there were exciting times on the outer harbour wall!!
