A super day. Very cold with a maximum temperature of only 5 and a minimum of -1 degrees. There had been snow early on but by 11.00 the cloud had cleared and I decided to visit the yard to see what was about. There was a great deal of activity, presumably because of the weather. The goldfinches were queueing up for the niger feeder a dozen at a time. The highlight though was the fact that a female greater spotted woodpecker came down three times feeding on the fat and nuts. Now for some pictures. It had been around for some time but this was the first time I had seen it at the feeding station. I also disturbed a woodcock which exploded from beneath my feet as I walked through the plantation.
